Burger Patties
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Cheese & Buns
- 4 slices smoked cheddar, pepper jack, or American cheese
- 4 burger buns
- 1 tablespoon butter or oil for grilling
Toppings & Sauces
- Lettuce leaves
- Tomato slices
- Pickles
- Red onion slices
- Spicy mayo, remoulade, chipotle aioli, or your favorite sauce
- Optional: jalapeños or hot sauce for extra heat
- Prepare the patties: In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef with Cajun seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper, careful not to overmix. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into burger patties, making a slight indentation in the center of each for even cooking.
- Preheat the cooking surface: Heat your grill to medium-high or warm a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add butter or oil to prevent sticking and promote browning.
- Cook the patties: Place patties on the grill or skillet and cook 4–5 minutes on the first side. Flip and cook another 3–4 minutes until desired doneness. In the last minute, add a slice of smoked cheese on each patty and cover loosely to melt the cheese.
- Toast the buns: Lightly butter the burger buns and toast them on the grill or skillet until golden brown.
- Assemble the burgers: Spread spicy mayo or remoulade on the bottom bun. Add the cheesy Cajun burger patty, followed by lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onion, and optional jalapeños or hot sauce. Cap with the top bun and gently press to combine.
Notes
- For juicier burgers, handle the meat gently and avoid overworking when mixing.
- Adjust Cajun seasoning based on your preferred spice level.
- Use a meat thermometer to ensure burgers reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) for safety.
- Substitute smoked cheddar with pepper jack or American cheese to vary flavor.
- Add jalapeños or hot sauce for extra heat if desired.
