Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 fat ratio preferred)
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 large bell peppers (green, red, or mixed), diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Dairy and Cheese

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 8 oz provolone cheese, sliced
  • 1.5 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

Seasonings and Oils

  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick spray to prevent sticking during baking.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onions and bell peppers, cooking for 5-6 minutes until they begin to soften and release their fragrance. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds, stirring constantly to avoid burning.
  3. Cook Ground Beef: Add ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Season generously with salt and pepper. Cook for 7-8 minutes until the beef is thoroughly browned with no pink remaining. Drain excess fat if necessary to avoid grease in the casserole.
  4. Add Flavorings: Stir in Worcestershire sauce to the beef mixture to enhance the savory depth of flavor. Reduce heat to low and add softened cream cheese, stirring continuously until it melts into a creamy sauce coating the meat evenly.
  5. Assemble Casserole: Transfer the beef and vegetable mixture into your prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Tear the provolone cheese into pieces and layer over the beef mixture, followed by sprinkling the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly on top.
  6. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 22-25 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden on the surface.
  7. Rest and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the dish to set slightly for easier slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can use any combination of bell pepper colors to your preference for vibrant color and flavor.
  • Make sure the cream cheese is softened to room temperature to help it melt smoothly into the beef mixture.
  • Drain excess grease from the beef well to prevent a soggy casserole.
  • This casserole stores well in the refrigerator for 3-4 days and reheats nicely in the oven or microwave.
  • For extra spice, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes when cooking the vegetables or beef.
